MP4Joiner vs HandBrake: Can HandBrake Merge Videos?

Short answer: no. HandBrake — an excellent free, open-source transcoder — cannot merge several video files into one. This is one of the most common misconceptions in video forums, usually caused by its queue feature. This page clears up what the queue and “append” actually do, and shows the two tools working together the way they were designed to: MP4Joiner joins, HandBrake shrinks.

The misconception, piece by piece

  • “Add all files to the queue and it merges them.” The queue is a batch list: HandBrake encodes each queued source into its own output file, one after another. Ten files in, ten files out — nothing is merged.
  • “There is an append option.” HandBrake works with titles and chapters inside a single source (for example, a disc image or a file that already contains chapters). Selecting a range of chapters is choosing part of one file, not stitching separate files together.
  • “Just concatenate the outputs afterwards.” That final step is, by definition, a joining job — which is the tool HandBrake isn’t. People end up doing it in a joiner anyway, after wasting an encode cycle.

What it isFree, open-source video transcoder (GPL)Free, open-source MP4 joiner/splitter (GNU GPL)
Merges separate files into oneNo — no merge or append function for separate filesYes — that is its core job
Batch queueYes — encodes many files, each to its own outputThe clip list is the join: all listed clips become one file
Re-encodingAlways — transcoding is the productOnly if you enable force re-encode; default is lossless stream copy
Compression strengthExcellent: modern codecs, quality-based encoding, presetsNone — joining does not shrink anything
PlatformsWindows, macOS, LinuxWindows and macOS; Linux from source

The workflow that uses both correctly

Step 1 — Join losslessly. Assemble your clips in MP4Joiner (download, guide). Because nothing is re-encoded, you keep a full-quality master and the step takes moments.

Step 2 — Compress deliberately, if needed. If the joined master is too large to send or upload, run it through HandBrake from the official HandBrake site with a quality-based preset. Now the single, intentional re-encode happens on the finished video — not on fragments you would later have to join. Our compression guide covers the settings and the cases where you should skip compressing altogether.

Bottom line: HandBrake and MP4Joiner are not rivals; they are consecutive steps. Anyone telling you HandBrake “merged” their files either encoded them one by one or joined them with something else afterwards.
