MP4Splitter: The Other Half of MP4Tools

MP4Splitter is the splitting program in the free, open-source MP4Tools suite by Alex Thüring — the same suite as MP4Joiner. There is no separate download: the single MP4Tools 3.8 installer installs both programs together.

What MP4Splitter does

  • Splits one MP4 file into multiple parts at points you choose, without re-encoding in the default mode.
  • Keyframe-only splitting (added in 3.8): an option to split only at keyframes — it is off by default. Splitting at keyframes keeps each part independently playable; splitting elsewhere may require re-encoding.
  • Drag-and-drop support for adding files (also added in 3.8).
  • .mpg splitting (added in 3.7): MP4Splitter — not MP4Joiner — gained the ability to split .mpg files in version 3.7. Do not confuse the two programs’ format lists.

How to split a file

  1. Install MP4Tools from the buttons above (Joiner and Splitter install together).
  2. Open MP4Splitter and add your file (or drag and drop it in).
  3. Mark the split points on the timeline.
  4. If clean, independently playable parts matter, enable the keyframe splitting option.
  5. Start the split and find the parts in your chosen output folder.
